The Skinny on A/C Refrigerant Changes
If you haven’t heard, the EPA updated their A/C refrigerant rules effective January 1, 2025. R-454B is the next generation of refrigerant developed to further reduce our greenhouse gases. This latest change replaces R-410A and R-22 equipment.
FAQs on R-454B:
Systems designed for R-454B are being optimized for better energy use, which may lead to lower utility bills.
Transitioning to R-454B meets the requirements set by the EPA to reduce the use of high Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants like R-410A and R-22. R-454B has a significantly lower GWP than all other refrigerants.
Existing air conditioning systems cannot be retrofitted to use R-454B. Manufacturers have had to redesign equipment because R-454B requires specific components and system designs.
Currently, this equipment and refrigerant are not widely available. Our Equipment Experts can advise you more when you schedule an appointment, when it is time to replace your A/C system.
