Air Conditioning Tips for the End of Summer

2-minute read

End of Season A/C Service Is Important for Your Home!

While you may have turned the page in your calendar to September, you know there’s still some summer left in southwestern Connecticut. And that means you may still be using your home’s air conditioning system to keep your home comfortable during the day.

We have some tips to help you keep it running smooth, and have it ready for next summer… because it’ll be here before you know it!

Use Your Air Conditioner Less

If you are still running the A/C like it’s a July heat wave, you’re overworking the system and wasting energy. Use ceiling fans or open the windows when you need air circulating more than cooling. Raise the temperature on the thermostat, as well. This is a good time to upgrade your thermostat. The professionals at Rural Fuels can help you choose the right one for your home, including smart thermostats that allow you to adjust temperatures via your smartphone!

Clean Up Around Your A/C Unit

Grass clippings from lawn-mowing, stray twigs, weeds, and assorted debris may be blocking the air flow in your air conditioner unit. Check it closely and clear the area around the unit.

Clean the Condenser Coils

If you haven’t cleaned your condenser coils all summer, you may be forcing your A/C to work harder at cooling your home thanks to mildew and moisture buildup. While you’re doing it, check the condensate drain for clogs.

Change Your Air Filter

Between vacations, beach days, family get-togethers, youth sports and everything else you’ve done this summer, changing the filter on your air conditioning system may have slipped your mind. If you have an average size suburban home, you should be changing it at least every 90 days, and more frequently if you have pets and/or someone with allergies in your home. Putting a fresh filter in helps your A/C run more efficiently.
