Avoid Heating Oil Run Outs

5-minute read

Running out of Bioheat home heating oil in the middle of a New England winter is no fun – but a cold snap here or a little bit of forgetfulness there and you could find yourself on the wrong end of a no-heat emergency in your home.

The good news is that running out of Bioheat will probably not harm your furnace or boiler since each has safety features that will automatically turn off the burner when there is no fuel in the tank.

The bad news, besides having to live in a potentially dangerously cold house for a time, is that running out of Bioheat can cause other problems – clogged oil lines from the sediment that collects in the bottom of your oil tank, for example. Frozen pipes are also a major concern, with potential for thousands of dollars in flood damage.

The bottom line: running out of Bioheat home heating oil is definitely something you want to avoid!

Immediate steps: What to do if you run out of Bioheat Home heating oil

If you find yourself without Bioheat, don’t panic: Rural Fuels is there for you with 24/7 emergency service by calling 203-364-5816. Our Technical Experts will get to you as soon as possible to refill your tank and restart your burner.

In the meantime, take the following steps:

  • If it is winter, make an effort to retain the heat you have in your house: close curtains, block under-door drafts, hang blankets over doorways, etc.

  • If you have other forms of heating such as a fireplace or electric heater, use them.

  • NEVER use outdoor equipment (barbecues, outdoor stoves, etc.) indoors – carbon monoxide build up can be extremely dangerous or even deadly.

Be proactive: preventing a Bioheat Home heating oil run out

When it comes to fuel run outs, prevention is always best. You can avoid running out of Bioheat if you:

  • Choose FREE automatic delivery – Let us worry about managing your deliveries. There is no cost for the service – we will simply arrive when your tank is one quarter full (based on an estimate of your typical usage plus the weather).

  • If you wish to remain a will-call customer, you must monitor your fuel gauge regularly, especially during a cold snap.

  • Order your Bioheat when your tank is no less than 25 percent full (sooner if it is really cold!). Don’t wait until the last minute - instant deliveries are not always possible.

  • Consider installing an electronic tank gauge to monitor your fuel level.

  • Secure your oil tank to prevent theft.
