Bioheat Home Heating Oil is Cleaner and Greener

1-minute read

Since 2018, all heating oil delivered in Connecticut is required to be ultra-low-sulfur heating oil and when combined with biodiesel, becomes Bioheat.

Bioheat home heating oil has less than 15 parts-per-million (ppm) of sulfur, a dramatic reduction compared to heating oil of the past which averaged 3,000 ppm before 2014. When combined with biodiesel, made with renewable resources like plant oils, animal fats, and algae, the fuel you purchase for your home is better for the environment, your heating system, and your bank account.

Increasing the percentage of biodiesel in our heating oil blend is a major part of our industry’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050! And reducing sulfur in heating oil has a direct impact on greenhouse gas emissions. Sulfur dioxide emissions are reduced by 97%, nitrous oxide emissions are reduced by 10%, and particulate matter emissions are reduced by 85%.

As a Rural Fuel’s home heating oil customer, you’ll see the impact of our bioheat blend even more directly:

  • Improved efficiency means you’ll use less fuel reducing your annual heating costs

  • Less wear on your furnace or boiler leads to fewer breakdowns with a longer heating system lifespan
