What’s That Smell? Be Aware of Furnace Odors

2-minute read

Not all smells are created equal. And while not all smells coming from your furnace are a cause of concern, there are some that might mean you need to give us a call for an appointment with one of our Technical Experts.

A burning or musty smell:

This one is pretty common right after you’ve turned on your furnace for the heating season. Should you be concerned? Not really. These smells tend to go away within a week as your system starts back up again after being off for months. If the smell doesn’t go away, contact us for a service appointment – we might need to replace the air filter or resolve a more serious problem.

A metallic or burning plastic smell:

A part inside your furnace is most likely overheating. Should you be concerned? Yes. Shut off the furnace right away and call us so one of our Technical Experts can come check it out.

Noxious exhaust odors or smoke:

Your exhaust chimney might be partially or completely blocked. Should you be concerned? Yes. A blockage increases the chance of a dangerous carbon monoxide buildup in your home.  Turn off the furnace immediately and get in touch with us right away.
