5 Tips for Saving on Heating Oil this Winter

Keep warm AND save some money!

winter heating tipsWe New Englanders can be frugal, it’s true. Many of us will put on another layer of L.L. Bean flannel before we’ll turn up (or turn on) the heat in our Fairfield County home.

However, if we do some smart things now, we can keep our heating oil costs down without sacrificing comfort!
Get a tune-up of your furnace or boiler. When you get regular maintenance of your home heating system, you help it to run at peak efficiency so you’re not wasting money. Make sure your system is in top shape before the worst of winter arrives. Want to save even more? Ask us about our Rural Fuels service plans for your home heating (and cooling!) systems, too!

Keep the warm air in, and the cold air out. Did you know that you can lose up to 15 percent of the heated air in your home to drafts? That’s literally throwing money out the door … or window; the most common places for drafts. A little time spent on weatherstripping and caulk, and buying a few door-stops, can help stop the drafts and save you some money.

Let your heated air circulate. When heated air is blocked from the rest of the room by furniture, curtains or other obstructions, your heating system will work harder than it actually needs to. Make sure there’s a clear space around vents, baseboard heaters, and radiators so that heat you’re paying for reaches the whole room.

Practice smart thermostat usage. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, using your thermostat properly can save you up to 10 percent on your heating costs per year. A programmable thermostat makes that so easy. You can program it so you’re using less heat while you’re away from home, and so that your home is warm when you get back, without it running non-stop when no ones around.

Consider upgrading your furnace or boiler. If your home heating system is more than 15 years old, its efficiency may have plummeted down to 60 percent. Today’s efficient furnaces and boilers offer efficiencies of 90 percent or more! That helps you recoup your investment sooner thanks to fuel savings, while letting you get more warmth for less money. The professionals at Rural Fuels can help you with sales, installation, and maintenance.
