Is it time to replace your home heating oil tank?

WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR BIOHEAT TANK:

Oil tanks tend to be the forgotten piece of equipment in every basement. They’ve been there silently working to keep your home warm for decades. Depending on your tank’s age and condition, there might be some signs on the outside of the tank that will indicate whether it’s time for a replacement (corrosion and wet marks), however most damage is unseen. Older tanks often have moisture and sediment that have built up over time which can cause corrosion and create holes from the inside out leading to a leaking tank.

If you have questions about the state of your oil tank, please give us a call to schedule an appointment with one of our Equipment Experts. We will conduct a tank inspection, provide information on its condition, and share recommendations.

BENEFITS OF A NEW BIOHEAT TANK:

Thanks to the advances in home heating oil over the last 5-10 years, putting in a new tank now will mean it lasts even longer than expected! And according to industry testing, these new tanks won’t experience the same problems as tanks installed many years ago. The bio component in Bioheat acts as a cleanser that actively cleans the inside of the tank and prevents buildup. With the percentage of biodiesel in Bioheat increasing over the next several years, installing a new tank is not only a great investment but will help your heating equipment run more efficiently.

Our recommendation for a tank replacement:

  • Outdoor tanks double walled, environmentally certified models last approximately 10 years in the elements.

  • Indoor tanks should also be environmentally certified to safely last their 20+ year life expectancy.

So don’t forget about the tank in your basement. Replacing it is quick and easy – we are in and out in one day.

As someone who’s been out in the field for years, I’ve answered just about every question you can think of when it comes to oil tanks. But here are three I hear most often from homeowners.

- Brian, Equipment Expert

  • You know it really varies. Some tanks last for 10 years and some for over 50 years – it all depends on the environment and quality of the tank. If your tank is outside, expect to replace it more frequently since it’s exposed to the elements.

  • Leaking tanks can happen at any time, but especially with older tanks that show a lot of wear and tear. Believe it or not, if you’re someone who keeps their tank pretty empty in the off season, you’re inviting a leak to happen. When warmer or fluctuating temperatures are combined with a partially filled oil tank, condensation starts to form on the bare walls inside the tank, eventually dripping down into the fuel. Because water is heavier than oil, it sinks to the bottom of your tank where it creates bacteria and debris that settles at the bottom of your tank. This can lead to clogs, corrosion, decreased efficiency, and breakdowns. Some of these problems are repairable but we often find that the oil tank needs to be replaced.

  • Well, you might be able to buy the tank online, but it doesn’t include the parts, installation, labor, and removal of your old tank. So, while you think you’re getting a deal online, in the end it will probably cost more. Our pricing covers your tank replacement from start to finish with our workmanship guaranteed by a reputable local company.

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIALS

I Choose Rural Because…

Previously used Rural only for propane for pool for many years. Brian Curry and team from Rural just installed a new boiler (oil) for us and Rural now provides all of my energy needs (absent electricity). Highly professional, exceptional broad knowledge, calmly explains everything, and more than prompt. Specifically, boiler and water tank custom installation within 2 weeks of initials consultation after my previous fuel and service provider (20 years) asserted that the specific boiler recommended could not be installed in my house (the same boiler Rural installed today). Team members also exceptional. 100 percent recommend Rural! Monroe, CT customer.

We needed an oil service for our new home and after searching around a bit, I landed on Rural Fuels. Shoutout to Dawn for being the absolute best, she gave off immediate Aunty vibes. We were worried about having no fuel when we first moved in & Dawn set up everything for us through our attorney/realtor. Dawn went above & beyond anything I imagined for a service, and she makes the company look phenomenal. Last night we were worried about low fuel & I called Dawn at 8 pm (felt terrible!) & she logged on from home & assured me we’d have oil in the morning, and moved us to the first delivery of the day. & then she told me I could reach out anytime & it was no worries - what a gem she is! Company delivers oil at a good price & seems reliable. This is basically a review about how awesome Dawn is & she probably needs a bonus! ;)
